Columbia was established in 1786 as one of the first planned communities in this country.
- A major landmark in Columbia is the historic Capitol Building which was under construction in 1865 when General Sherman marched into the city.
- Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens, recognized as one of the top ten zoological parks in the nation, is home to over 2000 animals. The exhibits were designed without bars or cages and feature creatures and plants from all over the world.
- Spooky! The Robert Mills House was named for and designed by the nation's first federal architect, Robert Mills - the designer of the Washington Monument. Built in 1832, the house is said to have inhabitants of a ghostly nature.
- Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, lived in Columbia as an adolescent from 1870 until 1874. The future president's mother, Jessie Woodrow Wilson, built their house from money she received as an inheritance from her brother. It was the only house the Wilsons ever owned. Today, magnolia trees planted by Mrs. Wilson still stand on the front lawn of the house, and the bed in which "young Tommy" was born still remains in the house.
- "Innovista," a dynamic private-public campus focusing on hydrogen fuel cell research, is under development by the University of South Carolina. With the first phases opening in early 2009, Columbia is assured of a place on the cutting edge of technology for years to come.
