Subsurface Data Analyst / Power BI Analyst – Oil & Gas

Job Overview

We are seeking a Subsurface Data Analyst / Power BI Analyst to support upstream oil and gas production and subsurface operations in Midland, Texas.

This role is ideal for a data and analytics professional with strong Power BI, SQL, Python, and Excel skills who can transform complex operational data into dashboards, automated reporting, and actionable business insights.

The position will work closely with subsurface, production, operations, and leadership teams. In addition to analytics and reporting, the role will support data quality, New Mexico regulatory reporting, and Plug & Abandonment (P&A) activities.

Candidates with experience working with production data, well tests, allocation data, regulatory reporting, P&A programs, or other upstream oil and gas datasets are strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance Power BI dashboards, reports, and data visualizations.
  • Use SQL and Python to automate reporting, data validation, data preparation, and recurring workflows.
  • Analyze production, well test, allocation, regulatory, and subsurface datasets.
  • Transform complex operational data into clear reporting and decision-support tools.
  • Validate data sources, identify discrepancies, and coordinate corrections with stakeholders.
  • Improve data quality, reporting accuracy, and data stewardship processes.
  • Support dashboard migrations, data-source transitions, and reporting enhancements.
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline manual processes.
  • Support New Mexico regulatory reporting and NMOCD compliance requirements.
  • Prepare and validate regulatory reports, supporting documentation, trackers, and audit-ready records.
  • Support Plug & Abandonment (P&A) programs by preparing technical packages and documentation.
  • Prepare wellbore diagrams, technical summaries, and supporting case documentation.
  • Generate and maintain AFEs supporting P&A activities.
  • Maintain reporting and tracking tools for inactive wells and P&A programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining Power BI dashboards and data visualizations.
  • Experience with Power Query, DAX, and data modeling.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and Python for data analysis, reporting, or workflow automation.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with data validation, data quality, reporting, and/or data stewardship.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets and translate information into meaningful business insights.
  • Strong communication, organization, and stakeholder-management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in upstream oil and gas, energy, production operations, or subsurface environments.
  • Experience working with production, well test, allocation, or well data.
  • Experience with New Mexico Oil Conservation Division (NMOCD) reporting or regulatory compliance.
  • Experience supporting Plug & Abandonment (P&A) programs.
  • Experience preparing wellbore diagrams, technical well documentation, and AFEs.
  • Experience with Energy Components, particularly production allocation corrections or production data/network errors.
